Nong Khai keeps things simple: tuk-tuks and songthaews rule the short hops around town, while the bus station near the Mekong handles longer runs into Laos and across Thailand. For crossing the Friendship Bridge, the shuttle buses run frequently and cost a fraction of a private transfer, just have your passport ready before boarding. Most guesthouses can arrange a tuk-tuk to the border in minutes. But agree the fare upfront since meters don't exist. If you're flying in via Udon Thani, the airport shuttle van is the cheap option straight to Nong Khai's bus terminal; it's slower but costs much less than a taxi. Taxis wait outside arrivals and are a splurge. But handy if you land late, insist on the meter or settle the price before you load your bags. Skip the touts inside the terminal. The official transport desk just outside baggage claim is the reliable choice.
